Frequently Asked Questions - Directly Managed Allotments

How do I apply for an allotment?

Contact Our Lettings Officers       Nick                          by telephone on                                   or E-mail on wheatleyhillsallotments@outlook.com

How old must I be to have an allotment?

Customers must be over 18 to hold a tenancy for a Doncaster Council managed allotment. Persons under 18 can visit sites but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (over 18) preferably the tenant.

Can a group apply for an allotment plot?

No, however please contact our lettings Officer to discuss.

Are there waiting lists for allotments?

The majority of the Councils allotment sites have waiting lists.  if you would like to see if we have any plots available or to join our waiting list please contact our letting officer Nick.

Do I need to register people who help out on my allotment?

Yes, it is important for plot holders who have help on their allotments from other people, that they register that help. This is because, at some point in the future should you wish to transfer the plot to the helper, the committee needs to have evidence to base any decision on. Requests for tenancy transfers to family members or friends, who have not been helping or who have not been registered will not be authorised. The plot holder needs to send details of anybody helping them and wishing to register an interest to our lettings Officer.

How much does a plot cost?

For 2018/19 a plot costs £0.98 per sq yrd per Annum (in February). Most plots are between 250-400 sq yds.  Rent includes the plot rent, a water charge and also a National Society of Allotments and Leisure Gardeners Association  Fee. All bills are issued in February  and cover the year in advance. Payment is due at the time of billing, bills unpaid for more than 40 days will result in termination of the tenancy for that plot.

Can I keep livestock on an allotment?

Yes, but only on some sites. On those sites that are allowed livestock chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys and rabbits can be kept, but only after written permission from the committee. All livestock on allotments have to be kept in accordance with current legislation. Dogs and horses are strictly barred from being kept on allotments.  Dogs are allowed on site but must be kept on a lead and all faeces must be picked up and removed from site. Please contact the committee for further details.

Can I kill vermin such as rats, mice, pigeons, rabbits and foxes?

No, on council managed sites you are not allowed to kill vermin on your allotment plots. This is the responsibility of Doncaster Council. If you have a pest problem then call the Street Scene Office.  As we are self managed sites we make own arrangements for pest control, please contact your allotment committee

How do I give up my allotment?

You can terminate your tenancy at any time. You must the contact committee  by letter. On receipt of the letter you have 30 days to clear any belongings and leave your plot weed free.
